This hotel is 300 meters to Tivoli, and 110 meters to the main train station. The area has narrow sidewalks that aren't particularly clean, with broken cobblestone pieces, and many multi-storied buildings, some of which are other hotels. Hotel du Nord is an 1882 building restored in 2007, with a non-smoking floor, and an elevator just big enough for 5 people with luggage.

The entry is up 2 steps from the sidewalk with an attendant at a desk and a sitting area with a sofa and oriental rug. Each reception attendant we spoke with was very helpful with finding family-friendly restaurants, providing notes on a tear-off pad of maps.

We were given a card key for a corner room down a narrow, clean, carpeted hallway. The door opened to a large room with high ceilings with plush decor. The walls were painted a very appealing light blue, and bed covers and curtains coordinated in blue and gold. There was a double bed with dark wood paneled headboard with built-in reading lights, and lamps on end tables. A sofa was pulled out to sleep two and an extra bed was positioned at the foot.

The bathroom was stunning - large, and pristine white, with a tub/shower, a counter with large mirror, and a fan. We felt welcomed with 5 covered drinking glasses and 5 tiny wrapped hand soaps.

The window opened inward and overlooked the street, and steady, but not heavy traffic below. On Sunday morning at 7:30am we were awakened by a loud blower followed by a loud street cleaner. Another morning there was a woman shouting in Danish on the street. But we always felt very safe. The Jensens restaurant just down the street had a nice atmosphere and other kids inside, even at 10pm on Saturday. We easily walked to every tourist site, and we never heard other guests while in our room.

Breakfast of meats, cheeses, bell peppers, cucumbers, cereals, juices, and pastries was served downstairs. A machine dispensed hot cocoa and coffee according to personal specifications entered by pushing buttons. The room was cheery but the chairs were a cheap plastic patio-type that were cumbersome to gather around a table and made very loud noises against the floor with every move.

We were in the hotel's 4-person family room, that can accommodate an extra bed to sleep 5. The rooms have internet access and a safe. Breakfast is included, and beverages are available for purchase throughout the day.

Of its 81 rooms, 24 are large family rooms. Each family room has a private bathroom with shower and toilet. There is wireless internet access, and a safe. The hotel is a 3 minute walk to the train station on a quiet, one-way street. Breakfast is included in the room price, and beverages such as beer, spirits, coffee, and soft drinks are available for purchase 24 hours a day at the hotel bar.

Billund

If you are planning to visit Legoland, which is in Billund, you must either fly to the Billund airport, or travel by train to Vejle (see 'Vejle' below for a description of the bus between Vejle and Billund). We flew to Billund, stayed at a hotel in Vejle, visited Legoland, and then took the train from Vejle to Copenhagen for the next part of our vacation.

Train from Vejle to Copenhagen

Train from Vejle to Copenhagen: There are customer service counters at the Vejle train station at which you may buy tickets, but at any time, even when the customer service area is closed, you can also buy tickets at a vending machine. My husband walked up to a machine and figured it out! He inserted our VISA credit card, and tickets emerged from the machine. For all 5 of us (2 adults, 1 teen, 2 children), it was $152.61 in July, 2008. The ride was about 3 hours. The signs are easy to use to find your train track and the time of arrival and departure.

To board the train, enter through any door into any car, but don't sit in cars marked 'quiet'. If you are in a car marked quiet, just move through the connecting doors between the cars until you find a suitable car. My hubby lifted our luggage onto overhead racks. The train is very plush. A train employee came by to verify our tickets, and another came by a few times selling beverages and snacks from a wheeled cart. There were many stops at little towns. It was a comfortable ride.

Each room in this hotel, has its own Lego play table and wireless internet access. The hotel's public areas include entire Lego play rooms, play station games, a fitness room, and an outdoor play area. Admission to the Billund swimming pool is included. The onsite restaurant serves Lego french fries.

There are special Lego themed rooms, and direct access to Legoland which may make the expense worth it to some families.

Internet price offerings sometimes include breakfast buffet and 2 days' Legoland admission.

There is a per person charge for bedding and towels. There are two public tv rooms, and admission to the Billund swimming pool is included. The room price also includes breakfast buffet.

Located 500 meters to Legoland, this hotel has a restaurant, an indoor kids' play room, an outdoor playground, and an indoor pool and sauna. The hotel offers a 5-person room, including breakfast and free internet access. Some specials include Legoland admission.

Other hotels in Billund that are further away from Legoland, such as Svanen, and Billund-kro, only have double and triple rooms, but are inexpensive. Zleep does have rooms for 4 people, but both the local reception manager and the corporate office confirmed that they will not place a 5th person in their 4-person rooms.

You'd need a car, or taxi, as this establishment is 3 kilometers to Legoland and offers two large apartments. Each apartment has a kitchen, a Lego play room, and internet access. Admission to the indoor swimming pool in Billund is included.

Vejle

Photo at right is of the bus between Vejle and Billund airport and Legoland.

Bus between Vejle and Billund: (see 'Billund' above for a description of the train between Vejle and Copenhagen.) If you are taking a train to Legoland from other European cities, travel sites recommend disembarking in Vejle, and taking a very plush bus that departs every hour for the 20-30 minute ride to Legoland, which is in Billund. (However, the bus is not cheap. Each way it was 57 DKK for each adult, and 38 DKK for teens 11 and up. Kids under 11 are free. For our family, with 2 adults, one 13 year old, and two 10 year olds, it was $29 each way with July 2008 currency rates. Pay the driver as you board, exact change is not necessary.) Billund does not have a train depot, only an airport. We took the same plush bus from the airport to Vejle. And the next day took the bus to Legoland, kept track of the last bus back to Vejle, and caught it just prior to closing time at Legoland.

If you don't have a car, consider booking a room in Vejle. But add on the cost of taking the above mentioned bus to get to and from Legoland. Unfortunately, most hotels in Vejle near the train station (such as Best Western, Scandic, Quality Australia, and Park Hotel) only have single, double or triple rooms. See Park Inn below, which is a hotel in Vejle that will allow 5 people in one room.

Vejle has many cafes with outdoor seating, and many clothing boutiques and many ice cream stands. We also saw a picturesque harbor and historical buildings.

Moderate to Splurge

One hotel in the city of Vejle, does have an option to sleep 5 in one room, at a moderate price, though it works only if a couple members of the family are not large:

The hotel offered a 4 person room with a double bed and two extra beds, stating our 5th person would be acceptable, but must share one of those beds. (The hotel also could offer two rooms next to each other: a double room for 2, and the second room for three.) We chose to squeeze our 5 persons into the room with two double beds. My husband and teenage son shared the pull-out bed, and my 9 year old sons and I slept cross-wise on the 'double' bed, which is, as in most of Europe, two twin beds pushed together.

The room was long and narrow, with a window at the end opposite the door - typical of modern hotels. The hotel is a stand-alone building set along a sizeable stream. We met 3 staff people at reception who were all very friendly and smiley.

We entered a spacious elevator to the 2nd floor and found our room down a wide hallway with tired carpet. Just beyond the door were open cubbies followed by a long counter that held the big tv, and a minibar sat on the floor with a sign explaining that it was no longer utilized. The windows both opened for fresh air and looked over the roof of the restaurant patio, a grassy area and the stream. The room had a very slight musty smell. The bathroom was quite large with a counter and large wall mirror facing the toilet and a very spacious, easy to operate corner shower, which was completely walk in - no step or door frame to cross -- the doors slide shut.

It was very quiet, and we saw families everywhere. On Friday evening, there was an all-you-can-eat barbecue on the lawn, but the price per person was too steep for us. Instead, we took a pleasant stroll along the stream to the Vejle city center and ate at one of the many cafes.

Breakfast is included in the room price and an abundant spread of meats, eggs, fruit, cereals, pastries, juices, coffee, and chocolate wafers were offered in a room full of wooden tables and chairs. Unfortunately, the meats and cheese platters did not have lids and flies were landing.

The hotel has free parking, and access to a nearby pool and fitness center (though the pool closes in the early evening), as well as internet access, is included. There is an onsite restaurant and bar.

If you arrive in Vejle at the train station, take one of the city's plentiful and large taxis to the hotel. The walk between the hotel and the city center is pleasant, along a stream. But with luggage, the gravel path would be impossible and the sidewalk route is too long. The staff were happy to call a taxi for us to return to the train station for our departure to Copenhagen.

To get to Legoland, we walked to a major street, and took the expensive, 1/2 hour bus ride straight to Legoland - see the entry about Vejle above for the cost. We had a bus schedule and knew the time for the last bus back to Vejle at the end of the day.
