This hotel's
family room for 5 people, has a private shower and
toilet, tv, phone, and includes breakfast buffet.
It is located some distance from the city center,
a 15 minute walk from the main train station and
city center, in a safe residential mansion near
Theresienwiese Oktoberfest grounds. It offers bike
rentals for a daily fee, free wireless network in
their smoking lounge and in most rooms, and has
free parking. It has a modern, 50's-ish looking
breakfast room.
This hotel,
near Sendlinger Tor, offers a 4-bed room with an
extra bed, a private bath/toilet, and internet access
in the room. Breakfast buffet is included.
We
had a difficult time finding the hotel from
the Marienplatz subway station. Even with
a map, you need to identify some streets by
their shape because there are few street signs
on posts, and some are hard to spot, attached
to the corners of buildings.
The
hotel's entry door is on a corner. The reception
desk (closed after 9pm - get a code for the
front door if your arrival is later) is to
the right, about 30 feet down a narrow hallway
from the front door. There is no lift, and
our room was 2 floors up. Thankfully, the
staircase is about 4 feet wide, and carpeted.
But be careful around the bends, as the inner
stair tread reduces to mere inches. Stay to
the outer side. Room keys also open the hotel's
front door.
Our
very clean and fresh room had newer light
wood floors, a long, narrow desktop down the
center, and a spacious armoir. The small tv,
with CNN as the only English language channel
(our kids enjoyed watching Jimmy Neutron cartoons
dubbed in German!), sat on the central desktop,
so our family had to position ourselves together
on one side of the room to view it. A small
fan sat on a windowsill, and a radio was on
the desk.
The room had a double bed made of two twin
beds pushed together, a pull-out sofa for
2 people, and the 5th bed was a newer cot
- but don't sit on it. If too much weight
is concentrated on one spot, a flexible slat
under the mattress will pop out of its holder
and hit the floor loudly. This happened 3
times over our 4 night stay, and was startling,
but easy to fix ourselves.
The
sizeable bathroom had plenty of floor space,
a solid door with a lock, an extra light framing
the mirror above the sink, a wonderfully powerful
toilet, and plenty of towels. The corner shower
(no tub) was small and had plexiglas panels,
and a curtain to cover the corner entry. The
water temperature, availability, and pressure
were very good.
Best
of all was the breakfast, included in the
room price. Up 2 steps and through a doorway
near the reception, we entered the breakfast
room. There were plenty of tables along the
walls, set with seat cushions, white linens,
flower vases, and coffee cups. (We found out
that the white ceramic holder on the table
is for empty jelly containers and dirty napkins.)
Help yourself to the spread of food -- meats,
cheeses, sliced cucumbers, bell peppers, and
tomatoes on trays with lids; bowls of diced
peaches & pears, and orange wedges; containers
of cereals (including corn flakes, and cocoa
puff types); dispensers of different juices;
a basket of rolls, croissants, and lemon or
chocolate pastries; baskets of individual
servings of jams, butter, and nutella; various
flavors of yogurt; and boiled eggs labeled
hard or soft. A server brings coffee to the
table.
The hotel is
one block from the Viktualienmarkt, and there
are other cafes, pubs, and shops nearby. At
night it is nice and quiet - we had the windows
wide open all night. The only time we heard
other guests was when they were using their
key in the door across the hall.
We stayed here
in summer, 2008, and we highly recommend it.
The family
room suite includes a living room with a double
bed and a single couch, plus a separate room with
2 single beds. The suite has a private bathroom,
separate w/c, tv, free internet, and a mini bar.
Breakfast is included.
This hotel
is in the Nymphenburg suburb, and is a 15 minute
tram ride to downtown. It has free parking, and
is in a quiet area.
This
hotel offers a family room with 2 double beds, and
in an email response, the hotel representative said
we could bring our own travel mattress (sleeping
bag) for our 5th person in the room. The room has
a shower, w/c, tv, phone, and is non-smoking. Breakfast
buffet is included.
This
hotel is 150 meters to main train station, located
on a quiet side street, and has free parking. The
hotel's email response also exclaimed"kids
very welcome!"
A family
room in this hotel includes a queen bed, plus 3
single beds, a private shower/toilet, free wifi

the center of Berlin-West. The location is sunny,
in a nice neighborhood. It is spacious, with soundproof
windows.
This hotel's
large family room includes a private bathroom with
shower and toilet, and available internet. The rooms
have high ceilings, and continental breakfast is
included.
This hotel
has a central location, close to the Zoologischer
Garten station. Access to a nearby fitness center
is available for a fee.
The hotel offers an
apartment to sleep 5 people, located 350 meters
from the hotel, with a kitchen and private bathroom.
It has a living room with double couch, and a bedroom.
Breakfast in the hotel is included. Parking is available
for a fee.
This hotel is located
in a residential neighborhood, full of restaurants.
The hotel's email response included the phrase "we
like kids!"
This
hotel is easy to find, in the city center,
a short walk from the Kurfurstendamm. The
owner of this hotel speaks perfect English
and is very welcoming and helpful with travel
plans like attractions advice, directions,
and transportation tips. The reception desk
is not manned except for breakfast hours and
at pre-arranged check-in time. However, the
owner lives upstairs and is available by phone
should an emergency arise. Be sure to have
any itinerary questions ready in the morning
for him to answer during breakfast times.
Upon arrival
to check in, climb about 6 wide steps and
find the hotel's buzzer, labeled on a separate
panel near the buzzers for the building's
other occupants. Enter through the large metal
door into a wide foyer of mail boxes and go
left to find the elevator. We had to use the
elevator in shifts, as only half of our family
of 5, with luggage, would fit at a time. Our
kids thought the elevator was fun - press
to the back in order to close the wooden doors,
then press the button for Floor 4. Upon checking
in, receive your room key, which also opens
the building's front door.
Our room opened
to a small entry area with very handy coat
hooks and the door to the bathroom. Beyond
the entry area, our room opened into a large
space with very, very high ceilings. The walls
were bright white and the carpet and light
wood furniture were fresh and clean. The room
included a double bed (made of two twin beds
pushed together), and two twin beds positioned
along a wall end to end, and to accommodate
our 5th person, an extra bed was added at
the foot of the double bed. Even with a set
of chairs and a low table, there was still
ample space to set luggage, and walk between
the beds to see out the windows.
The bathroom
was very clean, and small. Hooks were available
to hang wet towels by their tags, since there
wasn't enough wall space for many towel racks.
The toilet and corner shower (no tub) sat
atop a 6-inch platform. The toilet had a weak
flush - we had to flush multiple times on
some occasions. The shower had a tall curtain
around two sides, and plenty of water pressure,
though getting the right temperature was tricky.
Best of all, for the kids -- the bathroom
had a step stool. It was the first time during
our trip that our 9-year olds could see themselves
while they brushed their teeth!
The
room had a medium-sized tv that sat on a cabinet
and offered CNN as the only English language
station, a good sized armoir with more drawers,
and a tall, oscillating fan. A mini-fridge
contained beer and other drinks with prices
lower than any restaurant's, and refreshingly
colder than is normally served in Germany.
The two large
windows opened inward, and had another set
of window panes that also opened inward. Some
minor window hardware was missing, which made
it difficult to position the double-opening
windows and they banged a bit in the breeze.
We had to reach way up to position the tall,
wonderfully dark blue curtains over the open
window panes for privacy at night. Our room
looked out over the street that was quiet
both day and night, and lined with large trees
that form a canopy of leaves overhead.
Breakfast, included
in the room price, was in a room near the
hotel's entry, with many tables of 3 or 4
chairs, all covered in nice blue cloth. Our
family used two tables near one another. The
tables are set with coffee cups, napkins,
and baskets of individual honey, jam, and
nutella packages. There is another, larger
basket of individual bread spreads, and the
kids loved to search for their favorite -
nutella. The self-serve area has trays of
sliced cucumber and tomato, meats and cheeses
on trays with lids, cereals in dispensers,
two juices in pitchers, various yogurt flavors,
bread for toasting, rolls, slices of dense
bread (including chocolate one day!), large
coffee urns, a pitcher of milk, and powdered
chocolate that our kids added to their milk.
A computer with
internet access is available for hotel guest
use for a small hourly fee. Wireless internet
access is also available through the local
provider for a credit card fee.
We highly recommend
this hotel - it was very comfortable and a
great base for exploring Berlin during our
visit in summer, 2008.
This family
friendly hotel has a family room that can accommodate
5 people with 4 beds, and a pullout bed. The room
also has internet access and a mini bar. Breakfast
buffet is included.
The hotel
is a 5 minute walk from an historical marketplace,
and a 10 minute drive to Legoland. There is a hotel
bar, a sauna, and a child's game area with small
climbing toy.
The hotel is set on
a cobblestone street. Ring the buzzer to contact
the proprietor. The room key also opens the front
door, which has no porch and sits flush with front
of the building. The staircase is carpeted and plenty
wide to easily haul luggage up one flight.
Our room opened into
a very large, high-ceilinged room with a double
bed, armoir, end tables, and window. That room then
has a wide archway open to a room with another window,
a bunk bed, a sofa that converts to a single bed,
a table and chairs, and a small tv mounted on the
wall in a corner. (The remote control was faulty,
but we managed to get the tv on, with its german
stations and English language CNN.)
The windows looked
out to a cobblestone side street, and a small cafe
across the way on ground level. The windows had
two layers of curtains and plenty of privacy even
with the windows wide open. I thought the bedding
was clean but it smelled a bit like the beach, with
a faint, sandy, seaweed scent, not unpleasant, though,
and the kids didn't even notice.
The bathroom had newer
surfaces, great floor space, was very clean, and
had plenty of towels for the 5 of us. It also had
a window, again with coverings that provided nice
privacy,. The corner shower had a raised entry,
but was wide enough to easily step into, and 2 sliding
glass doors that met at the corner.
The building houses
an ice cream parlor where you can go in and sit
for an ice cream, or order something from the street-side
counter. The ice cream parlor doubles as the breakfast
room for hotel guests. During breakfast time, meats
and cheeses, juice, coffee, 6 types of cereal, rolls,
milk and yogurt are set buffet style.
This
family friendly hotel is a 16th century building
in the middle of an historical marketplace, 3 kilometers
to Legoland. You can drive your car to the hotel
to unload, then the owner will give directions to
park your car nearby, at no extra cost. The hotel
also has rooms that sleep 3-6 people, and an apartment
that sleeps 4-8. The hotel takes cash only upon
departure. Breakfast is included in the room price.
Photo
above is of Gunzburg marketplace street.
This
castle is easy to find, just two roads off
the autobahn, then well signed. Plus, it looms
atop a hill, and you can see it well before
you get there!
We first parked
where there were other cars and walked over
cobblestones, through a courtyard with many
tables, into the only open doorway we could
see. We found the check-in desk, and were
told we could drive our car closer to unload,
then return it to the parking area. Assistance
was offered to carry our luggage up 3 short
sets of stairs - 2 were carpeted, one was
constructed of polished, yet very old looking
wide planks with pronounced waves - hang on
to the railing!
The room had
a very high ceiling, with heavy dark beams
and walls of 4 foot thick stone, 2 mammoth
ornately carved wood twin bed frames pushed
together, a heavy, carved desk, a substantial
armoir, a small sofa with a pull-out bed for
2 people, and an extra cot. A lovely window
with curtain rods that swung into the room
for opening looked out to the stunning valley
below. A small tv sat on a shelf in the corner.
The bathroom
was pristine and large, with gleaming white
tiles and a jacuzzi tub. Uniquely, it had
a fan! Though there wasn't a shower curtain,
a shower head was mounted to the wall and
was removable if you wanted to use it while
taking a bath. Taking a shower resulted in
minimal water spray on to the sink.
We ate dinner
outside in the courtyard, and were provided
a menu with English and German. A kids menu
was only in German and the very helpful staff
person translated. The food was expensive,
beautifully presented, and delicious. We had
the option to add it to our room expense.
There were other families with kids dining,
and some were playing on a swing and slides
next to the courtyard.
Breakfast was
in a room near the front desk, with dark beams
and stone walls. There were plenty of booth
tables. The food was spread buffet style and
included vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses,
juices, and rolls. Coffee was served at the
table, and you can order a boiled egg.
It was thrilling
to stay in this quiet, comfortable castle.
I only wish the staff offered a tour of the
castle, or at least had information about
the castle's history displayed. See this site
for its history: www.colmberg.germany-castles.net
Breakfast is
included in the room price. Credit cards are
