Note:
In our experience, many hotels in the United
States offer rooms with 2 double or queen beds.
Usually, a family of 5 may reserve this type
of room, and then call the hotel to request
a rollaway or crib addition. Or, a family of
5 may reserve this type of room, and then just
arrive, and then request a rollaway or crib
addition. It is probably best to reserve the
rollaway though, as there may be a limited number
of rollaways or cribs available, and there may
be only a couple of rooms that have enough floor
space to accommodate an extra bed. And, there
are a few hotels that will not allow 5 in a
room, even with 2 doubles, but may make an exception
if one of the children is very young.
Centrally
located this quality hotel is convenient to numerous
tourist attractions. There are many different room
configurations, the least expensive being the Two
Doubles with sofa bed. For New York City this would
still be considered a good value versus booking
two rooms elsewhere. I found the best prices on
Expedia whose search engine accommodates the request
for five people in one room.
This is
a budget/hostel hotel. There are room types that
will accommodate a family of five, including the
Deluxe Room which is like a studio suite with one
queen bed, a king size sofa bed and a rollaway at
$10.00 extra. If your kids are little they could
all fit in the king size bed. The hotel is located
near Penn Station and Madison Square garden and
about five blocks from the Empire State building.
The apartment suites can also accommodate five people
but at an additional $70. This is a "walk up"
hotel -- there is no elevator.
The Hilton
Garden Inn is a brand new hotel located in the Tribeca
neighborhood just below Canal Street. It is near
China Town and Little Italy. The Metro stop is steps
away from the front door. It is a small hotel. The
front desk provides maps of the city. Our room was
too small for a rollaway so my son graciously slept
on the floor. Their were two double beds and a nice
bathroom. They do not advertise it on their website
as a room that will sleep 5, but if you call or
email them directly they will allow it. Guest room
amenities include a microwave and refrigerator along
with high speed internet access. Room service is
available in the evenings. The front desk personnel
were friendly enough. A complimentary coffee service
is set up in the foyer in the morning.
The Family
Suite can sleep up to six people with three "full
size beds" in a two bedroom configuration.
There is a refrigerator in the room as well. The
rooms have been recently renovated. This hotel is
located in the Upper West Side near Central Park
and a couple short blocks to the Metro Station.
This hotel would be considered moderate to budget
for NYC standards.
This hotel
is located in Midtown Manhattan near the Empire
State Building. If you have children under 12 this
hotel has fairly reasonable (for NYC) accommodations
including double rooms and junior suites and deluxe
suites. Children 12 and under stay for free. If
your children are over 12 you will be charged $60
per child resulting in an additional $180 for a
family with three teens for example.
Technically,
this hotel is located in Jersey city, but it is
just across the Hudson from NYC with easy public
transportation. There are views of the Statue of
Liberty and the Hudson River. The hotel has rooms
with two double beds for reasonable rates (weekend
rates being the lowest in fact as low as $119.00)
at the time I called 2/2009. They will allow a family
of five to sleep in the room but will not allow
a roll away. So somebody has to sleep on the floor
or three in the bed. This is a more common accommodation
in a US hotel than in Europe. Rooms include a refrigerator.
This bare
bones basic hotel is perfectly located in the heart
of Washington DC tourist sights. Almost all major
sights are within walking distance. There are 26
"deluxe" family rooms that can all accommodate
5 people some up to 6 people. If it appears that
the larger rooms are booked already, contact the
hotel via email to find out what other rooms can
accommodate a family of five -- they are not necessarily
listed on the reservations page. This is not an
extra frills hotel but is decent and clean. There
is parking available with a garage nearby.
The Washington
Suites - Goergetown Hotel is fairly centrally located
in the Georgetown neighborhood. The nearest Metro
station is two blocks away. The White House is nine
blocks away. The hotel can accommodate as many as
six in their one bedroom deluxe suites. The rooms
include an equipped kichenette. Complimentary breakfast
is included in the rate and baked cookies are provided
at check in. They have coin operated laundry facilities
and an exercise room. We used our triple A (AAA)
card for a significant discount when reserving.
Please note this hotel has a very similar name to
another more expensive hotel in the Georgetown neighborhood.
This hostel
is centrally located. It has dorm style rooms (bunk
beds) in four, six, eight and ten bed configurations.
A family of five would need to book a room for six
but at $26.00/night at the time of this writing
it may be worth it in expensive Washington, DC.
Some rooms are ensuite. Linens, towels, and lockers
are available. A fully equipped self service kitchen
is also available.
Another
centrally located hotel. These rooms include one
bedroom suites with a king size bed and sofa bed,
balcony and kitchen. The internet DC special included
parking and two metro passes which puts it potentially
in our moderate category if you would be using these
services.
This hotel
had large rooms with a kitchenette. The room configuration
included one room with double beds and the living
room that had a pull-out sofa. We slept our family
of five plus grandpa in this room without much difficulty.
A decent continental breakfast is included in the
price. This hotel is fairly new. There is a nice
outdoor swimming pool. Everything was clean and
corporate. The staff was friendly and helpful. The
location is just off of I-40 between Duke University
and the University of North Carolina. The hotel
is about 15 minutes away by car from both campuses.
We have a AAA membership which gave us the greatest
discounted rate.
Williamsburg, Virginia (Colonial Williamsburg,
Six Flags)
The Rodeway Inn is
definitely a budget hotel. The bedrooms are in
the basement, dark and very tired. That said,
the rooms were quite clean. The sofa bed is on
the ground floor (rooms consist of ground floor
and basement). The swimming pool is outside in
the middle of the parking lot behind the reception
building. It was also kept very clean. Breakfast
consisted of glazed donuts, orange juice, dry
granola snack packs, bananas and coffee. There
were families everywhere. The area seemed safe
and was in easy driving distance of Colonial Williamsburg.
The gentleman at the front desk could not have
been nicer or more helpful.
This is a great basic
family hotel. It is in a safe area just off the
freeway not far by car to Monticello and the University
of Virgina. The front desk folk hand out sheets
with directions to the various attractions. There
are double rooms that can sleep 5 as well as suites
that can sleep 6 using a pull-out sofa. The pool
is indoor. A continental breakfast is included.
There is free wireless high speed internet. We
found the staff to be very friendly and helpful.
